What the company does

Costco sells a limited range of items, including its Kirkland Signature private label, at very thin margins and earns much of its profit from membership fees, with renewal rates above 90%.

  • Net sales (warehouse and online sales in the US, Canada, Korea, Japan, Europe and other markets)
  • Membership fees (Gold Star, Business and Executive memberships)

The fiscal year ends in late August or early September (52/53-week fiscal year). Costco deliberately keeps merchandise margins low and relies on fast inventory turnover and membership fees for steady operating profit and a high return on equity.
